How GoHighLevel Attribution Tracking Actually Works
A contact clicks a Facebook ad, books a call three weeks later off an email link, and shows up in your pipeline looking like an ordinary lead.
GoHighLevel attribution tracking is what reconstructs that path afterward, reading the UTM parameters and session data attached to whichever form, calendar or chat widget actually captured the contact.
That capture only happens through GoHighLevel's own tools. Submit a form, book through a calendar, fill out a survey, start a chat widget conversation or complete an order, and attribution data gets written to the contact's record automatically.
Add that same person through a CSV import or create them by hand, though, and GoHighLevel's own documentation on how contact and opportunity widgets handle attribution is explicit that there's nothing to track: no session, no UTM fields, no attribution at all.
How GoHighLevel Attribution Tracking Captures a Lead's Source
Every tracked contact carries two layers of source data. The source field is raw and gets set once, at the moment the record is created. Session source sits above it, classifying the actual traffic channel behind the specific conversion being recorded: direct, organic search, paid search, social and the rest.
Both sit alongside the standard UTM fields: source, medium, campaign, content and keyword.
None of it means much until someone can see it broken down by channel, which is why teams building out reporting for a client wire these fields straight into the dashboards that surface pipeline and marketing performance.
First Attribution vs. Latest Attribution
GoHighLevel splits every contact's history into two separate attribution records. First attribution locks in the earliest touchpoint and never changes again. Latest attribution keeps overwriting itself with whatever interaction happened most recently before the person converted.
A lead who found you through a Google ad, went quiet, and came back six months later through an email campaign will show the Google ad under first attribution and the email campaign under latest attribution on the very same record.
Workflows can branch on either one using the contact's first and latest attribution variables, which is how agencies route a brand-new lead differently from someone re-engaging.
Building that routing logic is the kind of work that sits inside our own workflow automation builds.
Getting the UTM Templates Right for Ads
UTM parameters are not a GoHighLevel invention. They trace back to the campaign-tracking convention Google Analytics standardized for its URL builders, and GoHighLevel reads the same fields underneath its own interface.
Where GoHighLevel departs from that general convention is the template it expects per ad platform. Get the capitalization wrong and attribution breaks silently, with no error to flag it.
| Ad platform | Required utm_source | Template parameters |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | adwords | utm_medium={adname}, utm_campaign={campaignname}, utm_content={adgroupname}, utm_keyword={keyword} |
| Facebook & Instagram Ads | fb_ad | utm_medium={{adset.name}}, utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}, utm_content={{ad.name}} |
Those values are case-sensitive, and GoHighLevel's own setup guidance is blunt about not improvising here: don't layer custom UTM parameters on top of the ad platform's own tracking template, since the extra fields can stop attribution from recording at all.
Attribution filters on custom dashboard widgets only unlock once you pick First or Latest Attribution as the parent field. From there, medium, session source and every UTM field become available to filter, group or display as a column.
That's usually the point where a lead source report turns from a column of raw strings into something a client can actually read. Getting that structure right from day one, rather than rebuilding it after a quarter of mistagged campaigns, is part of what a proper GoHighLevel setup should cover.
