How GoHighLevel Conversation AI Actually Works
GoHighLevel Conversation AI reads every inbound message landing in a sub-account's Conversations tab and answers it, drawing on the conversation's history and whatever training material the account owner has loaded in.
It runs across SMS, web chat, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Google Business Profile chat, so a lead can start on Instagram and have the same bot pick up the thread later over SMS.
HighLevel's own support documentation for setting up a bot describes two ways to let it reply: Suggestive mode, which drafts an answer for a team member to approve, and Auto-Pilot, which sends the reply on its own.
Every new bot starts switched off, so nothing goes live until someone chooses a mode.
Setting up a GoHighLevel Conversation AI bot
Building one starts under AI Agents, then Conversation AI, then Create Bot. From there, HighLevel offers three build methods.
- Guided Form Setup, for simple lead capture, appointment booking and general Q&A without writing any prompts.
- Prompt Based Bot, for custom instructions and direct control over personality and actions.
- Flow Based Builder, for visual branching across multi-step conversations that branch depending on what the lead says.
Training comes from the website URLs and FAQ material loaded into the bot before it's switched on. The bot can also collect a contact's name, email, phone and address, and book directly against a calendar.
GoHighLevel's own writeup on the AI Employee bundle frames the point as round-the-clock support, lead qualification that feeds a booking, and nudging a lead through a funnel instead of leaving them waiting.
Agencies that want a bot configured properly, rather than retrained after a bad answer, often fold that work into broader GHL setup and configuration or build it from scratch with an AI agent builder.
How the bot plugs into a workflow
Conversation AI isn't limited to the inbox. The Conversation AI workflow action sends a configured question down a chosen channel, then waits for the contact to reply. Once a reply lands, the AI evaluates it against the instructions set for that step.
Multi-turn exchanges can continue until a condition matches or a limit is hit. The contact then moves down a matching custom branch, or a built-in Time Out or No Condition Met path if nothing fit.
That lifecycle is what makes the feature useful for qualification, not just quick replies. A workflow can ask what service a lead needs, wait, evaluate the answer, and route a qualified contact one way and an unqualified one another, before a person opens the conversation.
It's the same mechanic behind the qualification step in our law firm intake automation, and it's where most of the real setup effort in workflow automation goes: fewer new workflows, more time getting one branch right.
What GoHighLevel Conversation AI costs
Pricing runs on two models. HighLevel's pricing guide lays out a subscription path and a pay-as-you-go one.
| Plan | Price | What's confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| AI Employee Unlimited | $97/month per enabled location | Unlimited usage across Conversation AI, Voice AI, Reviews AI and Content AI, subject to fair use |
| AI Employee Growth | $50/month per enabled location | Lower-cost subscription tier, per enabled location |
| AI Employee Starter | $20/month per enabled location | Entry tier, available only on the Founder Plan |
| Pay-Per-Use | No monthly fee | Usage billed at token cost instead of a flat rate |
HighLevel requires the agency to be on its $497 per month plan before it will let that agency rebill AI Employee usage to clients. If Conversation AI is a billable line item rather than an internal tool, that's the plan tier it rides on.
A sub-account with a handful of inbound messages a day is fine on pay-per-use. Past a certain volume, the flat $97 tier covering four AI products at once stops looking optional, since token costs on a busy inbox add up fast.
