GoHighLevel Data Backup: What's Actually Saved for You

If your GoHighLevel account disappeared tomorrow, most of what's in it would come back within a week. Some of it never would.

That gap is the real story behind GoHighLevel data backup: the platform's own infrastructure protects itself, but nothing automatically protects you from an admin clearing the wrong contact or a workflow deleted mid-edit.

HighLevel keeps seven days' worth of database backups for every account, replicated across multiple availability zones on Google Cloud and AWS. That covers HighLevel going down. It does nothing for a mistake made inside your own sub-account, which is where contacts, pipelines, and conversations actually live.

Why GoHighLevel Data Backup Isn't Automatic

The platform's infrastructure runs on Google Cloud and AWS, spread across separate availability zones with point-in-time recovery built in and independently audited under SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001.

Disaster recovery here is automated and runs on HighLevel's side. You can't trigger a failover yourself, and you don't need to. This layer exists to keep the product running, not to protect the specific contact you just edited by mistake.

Data sticks around for as long as you're an active customer, and HighLevel doesn't currently let you set your own retention rules. Once you cancel, you'd need to request deletion in writing under applicable privacy law, since nothing resets on its own.

Exporting Contacts Is Still on You

Contact-level protection works differently, and it's manual. Only users with Admin or Manager roles can export contacts, and the export only grabs what's currently visible in your Contacts table columns, so it's worth checking your field setup before you run one.

Standard fields like names, phone numbers, tags, and custom fields all make it into the file. Automation history, meaning past emails and SMS logs tied to a contact, doesn't. Notes longer than 255 characters get truncated too.

Exports now run as background jobs, queued on HighLevel's servers and processed in parallel rather than locking up your browser. Once the file is ready, you get thirty days to download it before the link is disabled.

How Long Each Safety Net Actually Lasts

ProtectionWindowWhat it actually covers
HighLevel's own database backups7 daysPlatform-side restore if HighLevel's infrastructure fails
Deleted contact restore60 daysThe contact record only, not its history
Contacts CSV export file30 daysYour download link, then it's disabled

What a Deleted Contact Actually Costs You

Delete a contact and you've got sixty days to bring it back through Contacts > Restore. That part's forgiving.

What comes back is narrower than people expect. HighLevel is explicit that restoring a deleted contact won't restore its conversations, notes, or tasks. Those are gone the moment you confirm the deletion, restore window or not.

So the sixty days buys you the record, not the relationship history sitting behind it. If a contact matters, the conversation thread attached to it usually matters more.

Building the Habit Before You Need It

Most teams only think about GoHighLevel data backup after losing something. By then the automation history is already gone, and there's no support ticket that brings it back.

The practical fix is routine, not clever: export contacts before a big workflow change, before a sub-account merge, before you hand a pipeline off to someone new. Treat it the same way you'd treat a database migration, because structurally that's what it is.

If exports and backups are one more thing competing for attention inside an agency already running dozens of sub-accounts, that's exactly the kind of ongoing maintenance white-label support is built to absorb.

The same goes for the initial setup and configuration work that determines how clean your data is in the first place.

Export what you can control. For the rest, know which window you're working inside before you need it.
