GoHighLevel Funnel Builder: Step-by-Step Setup Guide

GHL Prime TeamOctober 6, 20263 min readGoHighLevel

The GoHighLevel funnel builder starts you with two pages: one that asks for an email or phone number, and one that delivers on what you promised for it. Everything else is extra steps, a CRM connection, and your own domain instead of a generic GHL subdomain.

Open Sites, then Funnels, and you'll see the same choice GoHighLevel has offered for a while: start from the template library, or start blank. There's also an AI option sitting next to both.

Opening the GoHighLevel Funnel Builder

Inside the builder, Funnel & Website AI gives you two ways around the blank-page problem. Assist Mode asks for your niche, goal and offer, then drafts a page from the answers. Build Mode skips the prompts and works from a plain description instead.

ModeHow you start itBest for
Assist ModeAnswer prompts about niche, goal, audience and offerBuilders who want structure rather than a blank prompt box
Build ModeDescribe the page you want in your own wordsBuilders who already have the campaign mapped out

Either mode hands back a layout, copy and visuals meant for editing, not for publishing untouched.

Turning a Step Into a Form That Actually Captures Leads

Every page in the funnel is a step, and each one needs a name and a path before it does anything useful. Click Edit on a step to open it, then add headline copy, proof and the form itself.

  1. Open the funnel, click Steps, and choose the page to edit.
  2. Click Edit, then use the + icon to add a Form element from Elements.
  3. Pick or start a form from the Form Picker, then click Edit form to open the pop-up builder.
  4. Add the basics through Quick Add, pull in anything custom through Add Object Fields, and save.

That pop-up builder also handles labels, button text and styling, without leaving the editor. If wiring this across a dozen funnels isn't where you want to spend a week, GHL setup and configuration is work we take off an agency's plate.

Matching Pages to the Four Stages Real Funnels Run On

A funnel that converts has a specific job at every stage, not just a page for every stage. GoHighLevel's own breakdown of a high-performing funnel comes down to clarity about what happens next, consistent messaging, and data that connects rather than scatters.

  • Awareness is the ad, piece of content or referral that lands someone on your landing page.
  • Interest is the follow-up that keeps them moving: emails, texts, maybe an AI qualification call.
  • Decision leans on testimonials, case studies and reminders that earn enough trust to book or buy.
  • Action is the CRM tracking and onboarding sequence that turns the click into an actual customer.

Most of that Interest-stage follow-up runs as a workflow triggered off the form submission, the same mechanism behind SMS and email drip campaigns. Action usually means the contact lands in a pipeline stage you've already built, not a spreadsheet someone checks once a day.

Wiring all four stages to fire without manual handoffs is workflow automation work, and it's usually worth more to a funnel's conversion rate than another round of copy edits.

Publishing on Your Own Domain Instead of a GHL Subdomain

Testing on a GHL subdomain is fine, but paid traffic there costs trust you don't need to give up. Connecting your own domain takes one of two routes.

Domain Connect handles the automatic path: enter the domain, let GoHighLevel recognize the provider, authorize it, and the DNS records get added for you. Manual setup means adding an A record pointing a root domain at 162.159.140.166, or a CNAME pointing a subdomain at sites.ludicrous.cloud.

Use one record type per hostname, never both, and set it to DNS only if you're behind Cloudflare. Then point the funnel at that domain and set a 404 page before sending any traffic to it.
