GoHighLevel Lead Scoring: How Engagement Scores Work

GHL Prime TeamOctober 10, 20263 min readCRM

A contact who opens three emails and books a call isn't behaving like one who filled out a form and went quiet. Plenty of CRMs file them the same way anyway.

GoHighLevel lead scoring works off a single number attached to each contact, the Contact Engagement Score. It climbs or drops based on what someone actually does, not what a form says about them.

That number lives behind a settings menu most sub-accounts never open. Nothing scores automatically out of the box until you write the rules yourself.

Setting Up GoHighLevel Lead Scoring in Manage Scoring

The feature sits under Settings > Manage Scoring. Every new rule starts in draft mode, so you can build a scoring profile and test it against real contacts before it touches live data.

Switching from draft to publish turns scoring on for every contact in the sub-account. GoHighLevel's documentation on the Contact Engagement Score describes the Scoring Rules table this way: each row pairs an action with a calculation, so you decide how many points it adds or subtracts, not GoHighLevel.

If that setup work is more than you want to take on internally, it's the kind of configuration our GHL setup and configuration work covers, getting the rules right the first time instead of by trial and error.

Which Actions Actually Move the Score

The action types available when you build an engagement scoring rule include:

  • Email opens and link clicks
  • Form submissions
  • Appointment bookings and status changes
  • Order and payment events
  • Survey responses
  • Tag additions or removals
  • Unsubscribes and spam reports, which typically subtract points

An appointment booked is a stronger signal of intent than an email open, so most profiles weight it heavier. GoHighLevel recommends testing each rule by sending a trigger link, clicking it, then refreshing the contact's profile to confirm the score actually moved.

Turning a Score Into an Automated Response

A score sitting on a contact record does nothing by itself. The value shows up once it becomes a workflow trigger.

You can launch a workflow when the Contact Engagement Score crosses a threshold, say anything greater than 20, and have it move the contact to a different pipeline stage, notify a rep, or fire off a follow-up SMS. That's the same mechanism behind GoHighLevel pipeline automation generally: a trigger on one side, an action on the other.

Workflows can write back to the score too, adding points for finishing a nurture sequence or subtracting them after a long stretch of silence. Building that two-way logic is exactly the sort of project our workflow automation team takes on for agencies that want scoring to drive pipeline movement, not just sit on a contact card.

Where the Built-In Model Runs Out of Road

The rule-based version has real gaps. Scores don't decay on their own, so a contact who went cold six months ago can still carry the number they earned while actively engaging.

Scoring also applies globally across the sub-account rather than by list. There's no built-in way to see how a score changed over time, only what it is right now.

GoHighLevel has described a different approach in its own marketing: an AI layer that reads call transcripts, pricing page visits, and conversation tone, then adjusts a lead's priority continuously instead of waiting for a scheduled rule to fire. In a post published in February 2026, the company framed this as scores that update based on behavior rather than on scheduled updates, with accuracy said to improve as the model learns from closed deals.

Until that's something you've configured and tested yourself, treat the rule-based Contact Engagement Score as a starting filter, not a verdict. Pair it with an actual look at the contact's recent activity in your lead management view before a rep decides who gets the call first.
