How GoHighLevel Membership Gamification Actually Works
Every like a member leaves on someone else's post in a GoHighLevel community turns into a point for whoever wrote it. GoHighLevel membership gamification runs on that single mechanic: points build into levels, levels unlock badges, and a leaderboard ranks who is actually keeping the community active.
What GoHighLevel membership gamification actually rewards
The points themselves are simple. One like on a post or comment equals one point for its author, according to HighLevel's own breakdown of the points, badges and leaderboard system.
Those points feed a fixed nine-level ladder. Admins can rename the levels, but the point thresholds themselves can't be changed.
| Level | Points required |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 |
| 2 | 5 |
| 3 | 20 |
| 4 | 65 |
| 5 | 155 |
| 6 | 515 |
| 7 | 2,015 |
| 8 | 8,015 |
| 9 | 33,015 |
Levels live at the group level, not the account level. Join a second community and you start back at level one in that group, even if you're already near the top in another.
Badges unlock automatically once a member crosses a milestone. A profile shows a progress indicator toward the next one.
A separate badge marks who actually owns or moderates a group. HighLevel added that one in a later badges and optimisations update, so members can tell at a glance who has administrative authority.
What the system won't do yet is link a reward directly to a level. Hand out a prize for reaching level 5, and someone on your team is tracking that manually, outside GoHighLevel, not inside it.
Turning other actions into points through workflows
Likes aren't the only thing that can earn a point. A workflow action called Grant Community Group Leaderboard Points lets you award a chosen number of points to a contact whenever any workflow trigger fires.
That's documented in HighLevel's leaderboard triggers and actions guide.
Finishing a course, booking a call, paying an invoice: any of these can become points, as long as the automation is built to catch the event and feed it into the action.
There's a catch worth knowing before you rely on it. If the contact isn't a member of the target group when the workflow runs, the action fails outright rather than granting the points anyway.
A matching trigger, Community Group Member Leaderboard Level Changed, fires the moment someone's level moves up. It's filterable by group and by level.
That's what lets a membership site send a congratulations email, or unlock a conversation, the instant a member levels up rather than on some delayed check.
Stack the two together and engagement from anywhere in the account, not just likes, starts showing up on the leaderboard. We've built this kind of loop into retention work before.
Our membership retention automation for a fitness studio kept lapsing members engaged through triggered follow-up rather than a single blast email.
What changes once Gamification 2.0 ships
HighLevel is working on a wider rebuild called Community 3.0 and Gamification 2.0, tracked on its own roadmap thread. The headline change is configurable levels and point values, replacing the fixed nine-tier ladder above.
Community owners on that thread also asked for course access tied to a level, so a member unlocks a lesson on reaching a tier instead of an admin granting it by hand. Others want points for weekly logins or live event attendance, not just likes.
HighLevel's Vaibhav Gupta commented on the thread in September 2026 that the update was 'likely to be launched by Nov.' Treat the fixed nine-level system above as what's live until you see it change in your own account.
Until configurable levels arrive, the most useful lever is the one already shipped: wire the leaderboard-level-changed trigger into whatever retention or onboarding workflow a GoHighLevel membership site already runs, rather than waiting on a roadmap item to make gamification worth setting up.
