GoHighLevel Twilio: What the Integration Actually Does

Open a fresh GoHighLevel sub-account and send a text, and you've already used Twilio. The GoHighLevel Twilio relationship sits underneath LC Phone, the platform's default messaging and calling layer. It handles the number provisioning and carrier delivery that GoHighLevel doesn't own itself.

Most agencies never see Twilio's name at all. It surfaces once you need more control than LC Phone gives you, or a carrier fee shows up on an invoice and you want to know where it came from.

The GoHighLevel Twilio connection behind every text and call

There are two ways a GoHighLevel number gets its messaging and calling capability. The default path is LC Phone: buy the number inside the platform, and HighLevel manages the underlying Twilio relationship for you.

The alternative is connecting your own Twilio account at the agency level with your Account SID and Auth Token. You then buy numbers from that connected sub-account instead. GoHighLevel's own setup guide is clear that this changes where the number comes from, not what happens after you own it.

Either way, buying the number is only step one. A fresh 10-digit number can't send business SMS until it clears identity verification and A2P 10DLC registration. Toll-free numbers need a separate verification instead.

Owning a number doesn't mean the traffic can send yet. That catches agencies setting up their first GoHighLevel sub-account off guard.

What A2P 10DLC registration costs on top of a number

Twilio frames 10DLC as part of a wider carrier push toward a trusted messaging system, one where customers answer texts without worrying about spam.

Registration runs through two layers, a Brand and a Campaign, and GoHighLevel bundles both fees into fixed one-time charges.

Brand typeOne-time feeWhat it allows
Sole Proprietor$22.501 number, 3,000 segments/day
Low Volume Standard$22.50Multiple numbers, 6,000 segments/day
High Volume Standard$64.00Multiple numbers, 600,000 segments/day
Extra campaign, existing brand$15.00Vetting only, no new brand needed

Each campaign carries its own monthly fee too, from $1.50 for a Low Volume Mixed Use campaign up to $10 for a Standard use case, according to GoHighLevel's fee breakdown. None of it is a GoHighLevel markup.

The support article states these charges pass straight through from The Campaign Registry, Twilio and the carriers. It's a one-time cost of doing business on US carriers.

When agencies connect their own Twilio account instead

Bringing your own Twilio account trades convenience for control. You get the Twilio console directly, your own carrier relationships, and the ability to request a number outside GoHighLevel's inventory.

Sole proprietor registration still caps you under 1,000 messages a day on one campaign, per Twilio's own 10DLC page. That ceiling is why higher-volume senders register Standard brands instead.

Moving numbers between the two setups isn't instant. GoHighLevel's own migration guide notes that HighLevel Support coordinates the move in both directions. Recordings and voicemails don't travel with the number, and A2P registration has to be reconfirmed on the receiving side.

Billing is where the paths diverge most for agencies reselling GoHighLevel under their own brand. Rebilling clients for phone and SMS usage with a markup only exists on the $497 per month Founder plan.

HighLevel's pricing guide sets a default 5% markup on pass-through charges there, billing the agency's wallet first.

Cheaper plans still rebill, just without a margin, and only for LeadConnector Phone, not a Twilio account you've connected yourself. Our guide to GoHighLevel's SaaS plans and rebilling rules breaks down what each plan covers.

So the choice comes down to volume and ownership, not price alone. An agency under LC Phone's segment limits has little reason to run its own Twilio console, especially one already offering white-label support and keeping billing simple.

A business running higher SMS volume outgrows LC Phone regardless of setup cost. Either path still needs its own A2P paperwork filed before the first message goes out.
