GoHighLevel Two Way SMS: Setup, Cost, and Common Fixes

GoHighLevel two way SMS turns a single outbound text into an actual back-and-forth conversation. A contact's reply doesn't disappear into a carrier void. It lands straight back in the Conversations tab, threaded against that contact's record.

GoHighLevel's own documentation describes a sender-priority order behind this. A manually selected "From" number takes priority first, then the number already assigned to the sending user. After that comes whatever number is tied to that specific conversation thread, and finally the account's default outbound number.

The contact needs a valid phone number on file, and the sending number has to belong to the sub-account and support SMS.

Turning On GoHighLevel Two Way SMS

None of that works until the sending number clears A2P 10DLC, the carrier framework that verifies who's texting and why. HighLevel's documentation on brand and campaign registration splits the process into two pieces.

Brand registration verifies the business itself. Campaign registration documents the message content, consent process, and use case.

Registration happens under Settings, inside Phone System, in the Trust Center. A submission sits in "Pending" status during carrier review, and an approved number picks up an "A2P Verified" label.

Filling in every field doesn't guarantee a pass. Carriers cross-check the business records, website, and sample messages against what's actually submitted, and a mismatch between those is one of the more common rejection reasons. Our guide to GoHighLevel 10DLC registration walks through the brand and campaign steps in more detail.

What It Costs to Turn On

The registration and monthly fees are passthrough charges from The Campaign Registry, Twilio, and mobile carriers, not markups GoHighLevel adds on top. Its own fee summary lists these figures:

Campaign typeOne-time feeMonthly fee
Sole Proprietor / Low Volume Standard$22.50$2.00
High Volume Standard$64.00$10.00
Low Volume Mixed Usen/a$1.50
Additional campaign, same brand$15.00n/a

Per-message carrier fees sit on top of that. The documentation lists them as a cost category without a flat published rate, since they shift by carrier and volume.

Why Replies Sometimes Don't Land

A two-way thread breaks for a handful of predictable reasons, and GoHighLevel's own troubleshooting documentation names most of them directly.

  • The recipient opted out with STOP or a similar keyword, which blocks outbound messaging until they text START again.
  • The number is a landline, disconnected, or formatted incorrectly.
  • Carrier filtering flagged the message as suspected spam or a policy violation.
  • The sending number isn't provisioned for SMS, or it's suspended or misconfigured.

Daily send caps and ramp-up periods add another layer. HighLevel enforces account-level limits that can throttle a brand-new number even once its A2P campaign is approved.

Checking the error code on a failed message, inside Conversations or a workflow log, usually points straight at which of these is in play.

Making the Conversation Useful

Once replies are landing reliably, the number selection logic in GoHighLevel's own guide to choosing SMS to and from numbers matters for consistency. Sticking with the number already tied to a conversation keeps the history in one place, rather than splitting it across a contact's other numbers.

Saved replies cut response time for the questions that repeat every day. Our guide to GoHighLevel SMS templates covers how to build them.

Pricing questions come up just as often, and the LC Phone cost breakdown explains how per-segment rates stack against the registration fees above.

For agencies still setting up numbers and campaigns from scratch, our GHL setup and configuration service handles the Trust Center submission so the first text goes out without a rejected campaign stalling it.
