How to Set Up a GoHighLevel Email Drip Campaign

GoHighLevel uses the word "drip" for two different features. Mixing them up is why some sequences land as one blast instead of a steady trickle.

A GoHighLevel email drip campaign usually means a workflow: a trigger followed by a handful of emails spaced over days, built inside Automation rather than the Campaigns tab. That's different from Drip Mode, the setting GoHighLevel uses to pace a bulk send to a list you already have.

Both get called "drip" somewhere in the dashboard. Only one of them is the welcome-to-value-to-offer sequence most people actually mean.

Where a GoHighLevel email drip campaign actually lives

Inside the platform, go to Automation and start a workflow using the Email Drip Sequence recipe, or build one from scratch. Either way it begins with a trigger: a form submission, a tag added to a contact, or an appointment booked.

From there, add a Send Email action for each message, writing the subject line, body and any attachments before publishing. GoHighLevel's own setup guide covers building that sequence from a form submission trigger, including a parallel version for SMS.

Wiring triggers, delays and content together correctly the first time is exactly the kind of workflow automation build agencies hand off rather than debug themselves.

Spacing emails with the Wait action

Between each email, a Wait action decides when the next one fires. The simplest mode holds a contact for a fixed stretch, anywhere from a few hours to several days.

From there, the options get specific. GoHighLevel's Wait action documentation lists several ways to control timing:

  • Wait until a specific date or time, including one pulled from a contact's own field
  • Wait for a recurring moment, like every Tuesday or the 15th of the month
  • Wait until the contact replies on SMS or email, with a timeout if they don't
  • Wait until the contact opens or clicks the previous email

Most sequences only need the first of these. A few days between messages is a reasonable start, though the right gap depends on what the previous email asked the reader to do.

How a drip workflow differs from a regular campaign

GoHighLevel keeps campaigns and workflows in separate parts of the dashboard. The distinction matters more than the shared word "email" suggests.

FeatureRegular campaignDrip workflow
TriggerSent manually, onceFires when a contact meets a condition
TimingSend now or schedule onceMultiple emails spaced by Wait actions
AudienceA segment or smart list picked each timeWhoever triggers the workflow, one at a time
Best forAnnouncements and one-off promotionsNurturing a lead from first contact to decision

GoHighLevel's article on scheduling a regular email campaign draws the same line: campaigns are one-time broadcasts, while a workflow automates the multi-step journey. Need a single announcement instead of a sequence? That's the broadcast side of GoHighLevel email marketing, not a workflow.

Why bulk Drip Mode is a separate setting

Drip Mode solves a different problem: sending to a list that already exists without tripping carrier throttling or burning sender reputation. Instead of a trigger per contact, you set a batch quantity, how often it repeats, and which days and hours it's allowed to run.

GoHighLevel's article on the new Drip Mode architecture describes batches of up to 10,000 contacts, with the system checkpointing its progress automatically. If the service interrupts partway through, it resumes where it left off instead of restarting the whole list.

The same update removed the old 30-day ceiling on a batch send's length. A large list can now stretch across weeks without a manual restart.

Whether the email templates built into the platform still need a refresh is a separate question from pacing, and usually the easier one to answer.
